Best Eye Cream for Dark Circles of 2027: Six Ranked by Cause

Dark circles have three causes and most eye creams treat one, usually without saying which. That is why the cream your friend swears by did nothing for you. Before ranking anything, this guide tells you how to work out which kind you have, because that decides the answer. We then rank six eye creams for 2027 by cause, with one overall pick for the most common presentation in the UK: shadow and puffiness, where Azio's Intense Lifting Eye Serum took first place.

Which kind of dark circles do you have

Stand in daylight with a mirror. Three checks.

Press a finger gently below the eye and let go. If the darkness fades while the skin is stretched or pressed, blood vessels are showing through thin skin. These circles are blue, purple, or grey, worse in the morning and after a bad night. This is the vascular type, and it responds to caffeine and to anything that thickens the skin over time.

If the darkness stays the same colour when you stretch the skin and looks brown rather than blue, it is pigment in the skin itself. More common in olive, Asian, and darker skin tones, often inherited, made worse by sun and by rubbing. This is the pigment type, and it responds to niacinamide, vitamin C, and SPF. Slowly.

If the darkness disappears when you tilt your face up to the light, it is a shadow. The under-eye has hollowed, or the fat pad above it has puffed forward, and light is falling across the step. This is the structural type, the most common after 40, and it responds to de-puffing peptides, hydration that plumps the surface, and a cold applicator in the morning. It does not respond to brightening, because nothing is dark.

Most people have two of the three. Treat the dominant one first.

How we ranked them

  1. Does it treat the cause it claims to treat, with an ingredient that has published evidence behind it.
  2. Is that ingredient present at a level that could work, not a trace for the label.
  3. Does it sit well under concealer and SPF without pilling.
  4. Texture and tolerance on skin that is already thin.
  5. Price per month of use.

We did not score packaging, and we did not score instant optical brightening, because that is concealer with a different name.

The six, ranked

For shadow and puffiness
Azio Beauty Intense Lifting Eye Serum
01Best overall

Azio Beauty Intense Lifting Eye Serum

What it is: a concentrated 15ml eye serum built on Alpha Complex 10%, three peptides (Pentapeptide-18, Hexapeptide-10, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5), a seven-weight hyaluronic acid complex, Ceramide NP, and Beta-Glucan, dispensed through a cooling Zamak applicator. Fragrance free. £29.

Why it won: structural dark circles are made worse by two things, puffiness that casts the shadow and thin, dehydrated skin that shows every contour beneath it. Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 is the peptide with the most evidence for reducing under-eye puffiness, and here it is one of three at a combined 10%, not a name on a box. The HA7 complex plumps the surface at seven molecular weights, so the step between hollow and cheek softens rather than being painted over. The Zamak tip is cold on contact and stays cold, which does in 60 seconds what most people try to do with a chilled spoon. By the end of the morning the shadow is shallower, and over 8 weeks the skin over it is firmer.

What we'd change: it is not a brightening product. If your circles are brown, this will improve the texture around them and do nothing to the colour. We would rather you knew that than bought it for the wrong reason.

Who it's for: anyone whose circles look worse in overhead light and better when they tilt their chin up. That is most of us past 40.

For pigmented, brown circles
La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Eye Cream
02Best for pigmented circles

La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Eye Cream

What it is: a light pharmacy eye cream with phe-resorcinol, caffeine, and a soft optical tint, made for brown and blue circles together. 15ml.

Why it ranks: it is one of very few eye creams that names pigment as the target and uses an ingredient aimed at it. The texture is thin enough to wear under concealer, and the formula is fragrance free and well tolerated.

What we'd change: the optical tint does some of the visible work on day one, so judge it at week 8, not week one. Progress on pigment is slow with any topical, and this is no exception.

Who it's for: brown circles that do not change when you stretch the skin, particularly on olive and darker skin tones.

Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème
03Best brightening eye cream

Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème

What it is: a vitamin C eye cream with a yellow colour-correcting pigment, borrowed from the banana powder makeup artists use on sallow under-eyes. 15ml.

Why it ranks: it is the best brightening eye cream in the set because it works on two timelines. The yellow tint cancels blue and grey tones the moment it goes on, and the vitamin C works on pigment over weeks. It also makes a very good concealer base.

What we'd change: the instant effect is makeup, and it is honest to say so. The vitamin C derivative is gentler than ascorbic acid, which is right for the eye area, but it is also slower. There is fragrance.

Who it's for: anyone who wants to look better by lunchtime and is prepared to wait for the rest.

For blue and purple circles
The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG
04Best for blue or purple circles

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

What it is: a water-light serum with 5% caffeine and green tea EGCG, in a 30ml dropper. Around £8.

Why it ranks: caffeine constricts the small vessels that show through thin under-eye skin, and 5% is a working dose. For vascular circles it is the most cost-effective product on this list by a distance, and the texture disappears under anything.

What we'd change: it does nothing for pigment, nothing for hollowing, and nothing for the skin itself over time. The effect is real and it is temporary. Reapply or accept that.

Who it's for: circles that fade when you press the skin and are worse after a short night.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharged Gel-Cream
05Best for circles and wrinkles

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharged Gel-Cream

What it is: a gel-cream with caffeine, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and the antioxidant complex from the ANR serum range. 15ml.

Why it ranks: it is the best eye cream for dark circles and wrinkles together, because it hedges well. Caffeine for the vessels, hydration for the surface, antioxidants for the long game. It sinks in fast and layers cleanly.

What we'd change: hedging well means doing several things moderately. It will not beat a 5% caffeine serum on vascular circles or a peptide serum on puffiness. The price is high for the dose of any one active.

Who it's for: the reader with a bit of everything who wants one tube rather than two.

For thin, crepey under-eye skin
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
06Best for thin, crepey skin

CeraVe Eye Repair Cream

What it is: a pharmacy eye cream with three ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and a marine complex, fragrance free. 14ml, around £15.

Why it ranks: thin skin is the reason vascular circles show in the first place, and ceramides plus niacinamide is the combination with the best evidence for thickening and strengthening it over months. It is also the gentlest formula here, which matters for the eye area.

What we'd change: it does not de-puff, it does not brighten, and the texture is a standard cream that some will find sits heavily under concealer. It is a foundation to build on, not a result on its own.

Who it's for: anyone whose under-eye skin is fine, dry, and showing the vessels beneath, and who is happy to think in months.

How to apply an eye cream so it does something

Most eye cream is wasted in the application.

  1. Use the amount of a grain of rice per eye. More does not absorb; it migrates into the eye and makes the puffiness worse by morning.
  2. Apply along the orbital bone, from the inner corner outward, not on the lash line. Product travels upward on its own.
  3. Press, don't rub. Rubbing is one of the main causes of pigmented circles in the first place.
  4. Morning: a cold applicator or a cold tool for 60 seconds before the serum, if puffiness is your problem. Then SPF over the top, every day, because sun deepens all three types.
  5. Night: eye product first, then your face serum and cream around it, so the heavier formulas do not dilute it.
  6. Give it 8 weeks before judging. Caffeine shows in an hour; peptides and pigment actives do not.

Questions people ask

Some do, for the circles they were designed for. Caffeine works on vascular circles within the hour and wears off. Niacinamide, vitamin C, and SPF work on pigment over months. De-puffing peptides and hydration work on shadow over weeks. Nothing in a tube works on a deep tear-trough hollow; that is a conversation with a doctor about filler, and any cream that says otherwise is overclaiming. Match the cream to the cause and the answer is yes. Buy the wrong one and the answer is no, however much you spend.

For the most common type in the UK, structural shadow with puffiness, the Azio Intense Lifting Eye Serum. For brown circles, La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar. For blue circles on a budget, The Ordinary's caffeine serum. If you are not sure which you have, do the three checks above before you buy anything.

No brand is best at all three causes, and the ones that claim to be are selling you the average. The better question is which ingredient, and that depends on the colour of your circles. Three of the six above come from brands that publish what is in the formula and at what level. Start there.

If by corrector you mean something that works today, a yellow-toned corrector under concealer beats any cream for brown circles, and the Ole Henriksen combines that with treatment. If you mean something that corrects the cause, see the rankings above. Both is the honest answer: wear the corrector while the treatment works.

No, though they overlap. Eye bags are puffiness, fluid or fat sitting forward, and they want de-puffing peptides, caffeine, cold, and less salt the night before. Dark circles can be caused by the shadow those bags cast, which is why the best eye cream for dark circles and bags together is a de-puffing formula, not a brightening one. The Azio serum is built for exactly that overlap.

Yes, if it carries peptides and hydration alongside whatever treats the circles. Four of the six above do. The Estée Lauder is the broadest, the Azio the most concentrated, and the CeraVe the gentlest route to the same place over a longer time.

Your circles are not a flaw. They are information. Read them first, then buy once.
